What can a vehicle power?
A car's 12-volt system sustains a few hundred watts safely through the cigarette socket, enough for phones, a laptop, and a CPAP. An EV pairs a large traction battery with vehicle-to-load output and supplies far more power for far longer, enough to run appliances for hours.
Clamping a high-watt inverter straight to the battery reaches that range too, but we don't recommend it, and the safety section explains why. Match the path to the watts you need, and run the backup sizing math before you buy.

The two ways to power devices from your vehicle
These two paths run from a socket plug you charge a phone on to a truck that powers a job site.
1. Plug-in (cigarette-lighter) inverters: Best for phones, a laptop, and a CPAP
A plug-in inverter slots into the 12-volt socket and charges small electronics, the simplest way to draw AC from a car.
Choose a plug-in inverter when you only run devices, not appliances. The socket fuse caps a steady draw near 150 watts, so treat that as the working ceiling: phones, tablets, a laptop, and a CPAP charge fine, while a fridge or a heater pulls far past what the socket allows.
- BESTEK 150W: One AC outlet plus dual USB, the simplest plug-in. Charges phones and a laptop straight from the socket.
- BESTEK 300W: Two AC outlets, a 30 W USB-C port, and an 18 W USB-A port, rated 300 W with a 700 W peak. The USB-C port charges a laptop directly, though the socket fuse still caps a sustained draw near 150 W.
Should you buy a plug-in inverter?
Buy one to charge phones, a laptop, and a CPAP with zero wiring. Pass on it if you need to run a fridge, power tools, or heat, where the socket can’t supply the watts.
2. EV and hybrid onboard power (V2L/Pro Power Onboard): Best if you already own it
An EV's onboard outlets or a vehicle-to-load adapter turn its traction battery into a generator, the strongest path by far.
Use onboard power whenever your vehicle carries it. A Ford F-150 Lightning supplies up to 9,600 watts through Pro Power Onboard, and Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, GM, and Rivian models supply 1,500 watts and up through V2L. The big battery runs appliances for hours, no add-on inverter required, though some V2L systems need the brand's adapter.
Should you use EV onboard power?
Use it without question if your vehicle has it. It outpowers and outlasts any add-on inverter on both capacity and runtime.
Of course, the downside is that you’ll use the energy in your battery until the discharge limit. You’ll have enough to drive to a charging station, but you won’t be able to drive a far distance after using the EV for considerable backup.
Why clamping an inverter to the car battery isn’t safe
Wiring a 1,000 to 2,000-watt inverter straight to the battery terminals is the one method we don't recommend, because the risks outweigh the convenience.
Heavy current through the wrong cable gauge or a loose clamp can arc, melt the leads, and start a fire, and it bypasses the socket fuse that would otherwise cut a fault.
The draw flattens your starting battery fast, so the engine has to idle for hours to keep up, which burns fuel and pumps carbon monoxide into the air around the car. When you need to run a fridge, tools, or a heater, an EV's onboard power or a power station does the job without any of that.
Using a hybrid as backup power
A plug-in hybrid with built-in outlets skips the inverter entirely. The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV supplies 1,500 watts from two 120-volt outlets, and the Ford F-150 PowerBoost hybrid pushes up to 7,200 watts through Pro Power Onboard, enough to power a home for days through a transfer switch.
Check whether your hybrid carries onboard outlets before you rely on it, because many do not, and those are the models where the 12-volt inverter is still necessary.
Does a car charger work in a power outage?
A plug-in car charger or inverter draws from your vehicle's battery, not the grid, so it keeps charging phones and a laptop while the house sits dark. That independence from the wall is the whole reason to keep one in the car.
A home EV charger does the opposite. It runs on grid power, so an outage stops it. Charge your EV fully before a storm, the way you would fill a gas tank, and learn the public DC fast-chargers and Level 2 sites within 25 to 50 miles as a fallback.
Most outages are short, but the average US household saw nearly 11 hours of outages in the hurricane-driven 2024, per the EIA. More than 85 percent of Florida's charging points came back within two days of Hurricane Milton.
One case people mistake for an outage: when charging your EV trips the house power, that is an overloaded main breaker, not a grid failure. Lower the charging amperage, or call an electrician to add load management.
Safety rules for using car power during an outage
A plug-in car inverter is safe when you respect a few rules, and dangerous the moment you ignore them.
- Never run the engine in a closed or attached garage. Carbon monoxide kills. Pull the vehicle fully outside before you start it. Read our generator safety guide, which applies here.
- Respect the socket limit. The 12-volt cigarette socket tops out near 150 watts. For more than that, use EV onboard power or a power station, not a battery clamp.
- Protect your starting battery. A plug-in inverter with the engine off can flatten the battery and strand you, so keep sessions short or idle the engine (outside) to top it back up.
- Match the wattage and the waveform. Size the inverter above your load, and run pure sine wave power for electronics, medical devices, and motors.
How to choose your car power strategy
You might have one or two solid options for using your car as a power source, so weigh the devices you want to power and know their peak and continuous ratings.
- Add up your watts first. Total the devices you need to run, then pick a plug-in inverter for electronics or EV onboard power for appliances.
- Choose the waveform next. Electronics and medical gear need pure sine; modified sine suits tools and lights.
- Compare continuous power against peak. Size the continuous rating to your steady load and check the peak for motor startup.
- Step up when a car runs short. For appliances, multi-day, or whole-home power, a power station or a generator carries the load that a plug-in inverter can’t.
